Nerve And Musccle Flashcards
Digestive System
Formed by alimentary canal (Gastrointestinal tube)
Suspended within the colon.
Coelom
The body cavity. Subdivided into the thoracic cavity (upper) and the abdominal cavity (lower).
Organ
An organ is a structure that is comprised of two or more tissues that act in such a way as to perform a specific function.
Tissue
A group of cells that have similar structure and function together as a unit.
Tissue types
Epithelial tissue
Nervous tissue
Connective tissue
Muscle tissue
Epithelial tissues
The tissue that covers all body surfaces.
Simple or stratified (one layer vs two or more layers of cells)
Three kinds of shape:
Squamous (flat)
Cuboidal
Columnar
Lumenal
Pertaining to the channel or cavity within a tube or tubular organ.
Apical surface
The surface of the cells that faces the lumen.
Connective Tissues
Structural Blood Cells Mast Cells Adipose Cells Melanocytes
Fibroblasts
Cells that secrete structural proteins like collagen, reticulin, and elastin.
Collagen
Triple stranded, insoluble fibrous protein.
Highly cross-linked which makes the finers strong and flexible. Most abundant protein in mammals.
Reticulin
A mesh work of fibers that act as a supporting structure for soft tissues such as the liver, bone marrow, spleen and lymph nodes.
Not as highly could as collagen.
Elastin
Highly crosslinked protein associated with organs that require elasticity. Examples: lungs, skin, and blood cells.
Cartilage
Secreted by chondrocyte, a type of fibroblasts.
A connective tissue that is found on the body where there is a certain amount of stress placed on the body.
Examples: nose, articulating surfaces of bones, intervertebral discs and the external ear.
Bone
A structural connective tissue that is organically comprised collagen and inorganically of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate.
Secreted by osteoblasts, a type of fibroblast.
Central cavity has spongy marrow where red blood cells and white blood cells are formed.
