Nero Flashcards
N/A
Neurology
A medical specialty concerned with the study of the structures, functions, and diseases of the nervous system.
Synapse
The junctional area between two connected nerves or between a nerve and the effector organ.
Dendrite
Short branches of the nerve cell body that receive stimuli from other neurons.
Neuron
The basic cellular unit of nervous tissue. Each neuron consists of a body, an axon, and dendrites. Their purpose is to receive, conduct, and transmit impulses in the nervous system.
Axon
Nerve fiber that conduct impulses away from the neuron cell body.
PNS
peripheral nervous system
SNS
Sympathetic Nervous System.
MRI
magnetic resonance imaging.
ALS
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s diseases.
Sympathetic
regulate essential involuntary body functions such as increasing the heart rate, constricting blood vessels, and raising the blood pressure.
Parasympathetic
regulate essential involuntary body functions such as slowing the heart rate, increasing peristalsis of the intestines, increasing glandular secretions, and relaxing sphincters.
Myelin Sheath
the insulating covering that surrounds an axon with multiple spiral layers of myelin, that is discontinuous at the nodes of Ranvier, and that increases the speed at which a nerve impulse can travel along an axon. — called also medullary sheath.
Meninges
The three membranes that envelop the brain and the spinal cord.
Dura Mater
The dense, leathery membrane covering and protecting the brain and spinal cord.
Pia Mater
the delicate innermost membrane enveloping the brain and spinal cord.
