Neoplasm Test Flashcards
What is a malignant secondary neoplasm?
A tumor that has spread to other parts of the body.
What is a malignant primary neoplasm?
The origin of the malignant tumor.
What is Ca in situ?
A neoplasm undergoing malignant changes but still confined to point of origin w/o invasion of surrounding tissue.
What is a benign neoplasm?
Not malignant, noninvasive tumor that does not spread to a distant site, encapsulated.
What is a neoplasm of uncertain behavior?
Behavior cannot be predicted. We don’t know what it’s going to turn into or do.
What is a neoplasm of unspecified behavior?
Unspecified as to either behavior type or morphology. We don’t know anything about the tumor.
Always presume a site is _________unless specified.
Primary
True or False: a patient may have more than one primary site?
True
If there is no morphology type, which parts of the body should be coded as a secondary site?
Bone, brain, diaphragm, heart, lymph nodes, mediastinum, meninges, peritoneum, pleura, retroperitoneum, spinal cord.
When dealing with metastatic neoplasms, there should be at least how many codes?
Two
What is the code for undetermined primary neoplasm?
C80.1
What is the code for an undetermined secondary neoplasm?
C79.9
What does metastatic “from” indicate?
The site mentioned is primary.
What does metastatic “to” indicate?
The site mentioned is secondary.
What do you code an unspecified mass or legion to?
Code to mass, lesion lump, disease.
What is morphology?
The form and structure of tumor cells.
What are the two types of malignant neoplasms?
Solid and Hematopoietic Lymphatic.
What are solid neoplasms?
Single, localized point of origin and are considered to be primary neoplasms of that site. Tend to spread to adjacent or remote sites.
What are hematopoietic lymphatic neoplasms?
Single site or several sites simultaneously. Tumor cells often circulate in large numbers in blood stream and lymphatic system or spread to other sites in the hematopoietic and lymphatic system. Never a secondary site.
What are overlapping/contiguous sites?
Next to each other. Use the code number .8
What is the code for no known primary or secondary site?
C80.0
How do you sequence neoplasms?
By principal diagnosis.
How do you sequence treatments at primary sites?
The primary site first then the secondary site second.
What are the exceptions to coding treatments of primary sites first?
Chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation. Use the code Z51.- then code the diagnosis or problem as a secondary diagnosis.
