Neoplasia - CPC IV Flashcards

1
Q

Formulate hypotheses about the disease process and diagnosis based on the information presented.

A

• 21-19 y/o

o Pap smear testing every 3 years

o Not recommended for HPV screening since most will regress on their own

• 30-65 y/o

Q

Discuss the role of HPV in cervical cancer.

A

• PAP Smear

o Inspect the transitional zone from columnar to squamous cells i

o Atypical Squamous Epithelium of Unknown Significance (ASCUS)

o Hyper-chromatic nuclei = positive

o 99% of cervical cancers = have HPV

o HPV 16, 18 & 45 most prevalent

  • Viral DNA integrated into host genome
  • E6 interacts with p53 and promotes p53 degradation
  • E7 complexes with Rb, also involved in HPV
