Neoplasia Flashcards
Leukoplakia ?
a mucous membrane disorder characterized by white patches, especially on the cheek , tongue , vulva or penis
Premalignant (precancerous ) lesion ?
A group of conditions which predispose to the subsequent development of cancer
Carcinoma in situ ( intraepithelial neoplasia ) ?
When the cytological features of malignancy are present but the malignant cell are confined to epithelium without invasion across the basement membrane
What happen to the carcinoma in situ ?
It may regress and return to normal or may develop into invasive cancer
Example of carcinoma in situ ?
(CIN) cervical intraepithelial neoplasia
Mention premalignant lesion ?
Hyperplasia Dysplasia Metaplasia Inflammatory lesions Benign tumors
Why its imporant to recognize premalignant condition ?
Because it is possible at this stage to completely eradicated the lesion
Example of hyperplasia ?
1- Endometrial hyperplasia = endometrial carcinoma
2- breast lobular and ductal hyperplasia= breast carcinoma
3- cirrhosis of liver = hepatocellular carcinoma
Example of dysplasia ?
1- Cervix = squamous carcinoma of cervix
2- skin= squamous carcinoma
3- bladder = transitional cell carcinoma
4- bronchial epithelium = lung carcinoma
Example of metaplasia?
Grandular metaplasia of esophagus= adenocarciboma of esophagus
Example of inflammatory lesions ?
1- ulcerative colitis = carcinoma of colon
2- atrophic gastritis = carcinoma of stomach
3- hashimoto’s thyroiditis = thyroid carcinoma
Example of benign tumors ?
Colonic adenoma = carcinoma of colon
Neurofibroma = malignant of schwannoma ( MPNSTs) malignant peripheral nerve sheeth tumors
Carcinoma in situ is a true neoplasm ?
Yes its a true neoplasm with all features of malignanancy except invasiveness
Common sites of carcinoma in situ?
Uterine cervix
Oral leukoplakia
Interalobular and intraductal carcinoma of breast
Example of carcinoma in situ ?
Bowen's disease of skin Actinic or solar keratoses Erythroplasia of queyrat Leukoplakia with dysplasia Cervical dysplasia Paget's disease of skin
Bowen’ disease?
Bowen’s disease is a very early form of
skin cancer that’s easily treatable. The
main sign is a red, scaly patch on the
skin. It affects the squamous cells, which
are in the outermost layer of skin, and is
sometimes referred to as squamous cell
carcinoma in situ.
Paget’s disease of skin?
Extra-mammaryPaget’s disease(EMPD) is a rare, slow-growingdiseasethat is a pre-invasive form ofskincancer. It looks similar to a patch of eczema and usually affectsskinin the genital area and around the anus. It is commonest in people aged over 50, with studies showing it peaks at around age 65
Erythroplasia of queyrat?
Erythroplasia of Queyrat (EQ) (bower disease of the glans penis ) is an in situ squamous cell carcinoma of the penis.[1]The glans and prepuce are most commonly involved.[2]Erythroplasia of Queyrat is seen almost exclusively in uncircumcised men. Progression to invasive carcinoma may occur, and spontaneous regression is unlike
Actinic or solar keratoses ?
Actinic keratoses(also calledsolar keratoses) are dry scaly patches of skin that have been damaged by the sun. The patches are not usually serious. But there’s a small chance they could become skin cancer, so it’s important to avoid further damage to your skin
