Neoplasia Flashcards
What are the 3 groups of tissue cell types?
Connective Tissue
Epithelial Tissue
Others
What are connective tissue cell types?
They are fibrous tissue.
Consist of cartilage, bone, fat, endothelium or endothelial cells (line blood vessels)
Muscle - (smooth is more proliferative)
What suffix do BENIGN Connective tissue cancer cells end with
-oma
Fibroma , leiomyoma, chondroma , osteoma, lipoma, haemangioma
What suffix do MALIGNANT Connective tissue cancer cells end with
Sarcoma
sarc = malignant & connective tissue
e.g. fibrosarcoma liposarcoma chondrosarcoma leiomyosarcoma osteosarcoma
What are epithelial tissue/ cell types
named after their growth pattern/characteristics
they line organs
What are the common prefixes for BENIGN epithelial tumors
Adeno- secreting epithelium
Papill- growing with finger like projections
Cystadeno- eptithelium is growing in a cyst
What are malignant epithelial tumours called?
carcinomas
carc= malignant & epithelial origion e.g. Adenocarcinoma papillcarcinoma cystadenocarcinoma squamous cell carcinoma renal cell carcinoma
What are other tissue types?
They are not considered connective tissue and they are not considered epithelial tissue
What are examples of other tissue types
germ cells (sperm and ova) Melanocytes mesothelial cells CNS - Lymphoid Tisse (nodes) Stem cells
What are examples (2) of benign tumors in the ‘other’ category?
- Meningioma - found in the brain (can be fatal even though benign)
- Mature ovarian teratoma ‘demoid cyst’ (germ cell tumors)
Maliginant tumors in the ‘other category’
- testicular tumors (always considered malignan- seminoma )
- Immature teratoma)
- Melanoma
- Leukaemias
- Lymphomas
- Mesothelioma
- Gliomas
