what is a neoplasm?
a new abnormal growth of proliferation of cells that may be benign or may be cancerous
What does carcinoma in situ mean?
first step of cancer progression- cell has changed to a malignant cell but still in normal, anatomic position
Are polyps benign or malignant?
They are benign
If you knew something was a polyp, would you leave it or take it out?
Take it out because it has the potential to turn into a malignancy
Are lipomas benign or malignant?
Benign
If you knew something was a lipoma, would you leave it in or take it out?
you would leave it in ONLY if you knew for sure because they don’t turn into malignancies
Other benign neoplasias?
Neurofibroma, parotid mixoid adenoma, follicular adenoma of the thyroid, papilloma
What is invasive cancer?
aka infiltrating cancer, invasive in the adjacent tissue
What does resectable mean?
can be taken out
What is the most common cause of small bowel obstruction?
adhesion of scar tissue from previous history. Second is hernias
What is a volvulus?
twist of the mesentery
What is the most important aspect of sarcoma in determining prognosis?
grade. Anatomical location doesn’t really matter
