Neonatal Resuscitation Flashcards
why would you give chest compressions?
If neonatal circulation is sufficiently compromised or if proper ventilation is established but bradycardia persists (<60 bpm)
what is the ratio for compressions to ventilations?
3:1 or 90 compressions to 30bpm
how can you give Epinephrine to neonates?
umbilical venous catheter (preferred) or endotracheal tube
Steps in assisting in circulation
Chest compressions (with two thumbs)»> EP (umbilical venous catheter> endotracheal tube)»_space;> Isotonic saline»_space;> blood (O-, placental or mothers)
Why are preterm infants more at risk for hypothermia?
larger surface area to body weight ratio, loss of brown fat, and immature skin that loses more heat
How do you treat apnea or the neonate?
stimulation quickly followed by ventilation
What elements does the APGAR score consist of?
Respirations heart rate (over 100 bpm) color tone reflex irritability
meconium aspiration syndrome management
endotracheal intubation and tracheal suctioning if respiratory distress is noted
What are the two most common reasons for inadequate ventilation?
blocked airway or insufficient inspiratory pressure
What are the complications are intubation?
may cause vagal nerve stimulation–> bradycardia, have to pause assisted ventilation–> bradycardia and hypoxia, and intubation may cause an increase in BP and intracranial pressure
Do you use 100% oxygen or room air oxygen (21%) for newborns?
room air
