Describe congenital rubella syndrome

A
  • -transplacental passage of rubella virus
  • -Early S/S: cataracts, retinopathy, microphthalmos, glaucoma, retardation, cong. heart disease, deafness, FTT, “blueberry muffin lesions” rash
  • -Delays S/S: 2-4 delay–diabetes, encephalopathy
  • -DX: + viral culture, PCR, IgM antibodies
  • -TX: isolate infant from pregnant woman, early intervention, refer to specialists

What is the clinical course of hepatitis B in the newborn?

A
  • -Transplacental passage of Hep B virus, incubation is 60-150 days
  • -S/S of Hep B: malaise, anorexia, N/V, RUQ pain, fever, HA, dark urine, rash
