Composers turned to inspiration to the classical period (Haydn and Mozart), or the baroque time (Bach, Handel, Purcell or Monteverdi)
What is neoclassicism
A reworking of style, forms or techniques characteristic of any period whole music predated 19th century romanticism
What typical forms were rediscovered
Toccata, passacaglia, concerto grosso, fugal forms and ostinato devices
Makes a return balanced forms (eg binary form) and often emotional restraint
Although they looked to the past for inspiration…
They gave their music a very definite 20th century flavour: eg abrupt modulations and sudden melodic twists
What were orchestras like
They were limited in size and presented instrumental timbres which are sharply contrasted
They emphasised the sounds of the wind instruments and percussion
