What is Neo-Marxism?
Refers to the followers of Karl Marx who have taken his theories in new directions
Who are the 2 main key thinkers?
Antonio Gramsci (Humanistic)
Louis Althusser (Structuralist)
What is hegemony?
The means by which the ruling class maintains it’s dominance and control
What does hegemony consist of?
Political and moral beliefs and values which justify and maintain R/C power
What did Gramsci disagree with Marx about?
The level of importance of the economy
What is relative autonomy?
The idea that the superstructure of society had some independence from the economic base
Gramsci argued that members of the subject class have a
dual consciousness
Strengths of Gramsci:
Tried to overcome the weaknesses of Marxism such as economically deterministic
Hegemony recognises the importance of peoples ideas and actions
Weaknesses of Gramsci
Marxists would argue that changes in society are ultimately based of economic changes
