Nematodirus spp Flashcards
Where are adult Nematodirus spp found?
In the small intestine
Which Nematodirus spp affects lambs?
N.battus
Describe the adult worm morphology
2cm long
Often found in groups like tangled cotton wool
Cephalic vesicle
How can male and female Nematodirus be identified?
- males have long thin spicules and a bursa at the tail end
- Females have large eggs within the uterus
Compare Cooperia spp to the morphology of Nematodirus
- Smaller worms 5-9mm
- Small cervical vesicle (bubble like in Nematodirus)
- Males only have short spicules
- Usually coiled
How long is the pre-patent period of Nematodius
15 days
Describe the pathology of Nematodirus
- Developing L5 destroy the mucosa
- Catarrhal enteritis
- Villous atrophy
- Fluid and nutrient absorption disrupted
What are the clinical signs of Nematodirus
- sudden outbreak of acute diarrhoea
- inappetence, dehydration, weight loss, abdominal pain
- disease in lambs about 4-12 weeks of age
What are the specific hatching requirements of the larvated egg?
- exposure to prolonged period of chill
- exposure to mean day/night temperature of 10 degrees
What must occur (lamb related) for disease to occur?
- Hatching must co-incide with presence of susceptible lambs
- Old enough to graze but before age immunity develops
N.battus is not susceptible to … ?
Injectable MLs
What are the 3 methods for control?
- Grazing management
- Prophylactic control
- Disease forecasting
