Negative Pressure Pulmonary Edema Flashcards
1
Q
What is negative pressure pulmonary edema
A
Typically occurs post op after extubation
Occluded or obstructed airway -increased vascular permeability- alveolar and capillary damage, impaired gas exchange
2
Q
Risk factors for NPPE
A
Surgical procedures: Thyroidectomy, tonsillectomy, mandibular ORIF, tracheal cryosurgery
Non-operative: Laryngeal spasms, ETT occlusion, excessive suction pressures, non-lethal hanging, hiccups
3
Q
S/s of NPPE
A
Similar to ARDS
Hypoxemia
Respiratory distress
Alveolar hemorrhage
4
Q
Treatment plan for NPPE
A
Low flow O2
Mechanical ventilation
Bronchodilators and or CPAP
Diuresis
