Negative Consequences Of Plasicity Flashcards
1
Q
However, plasticity can have negative consequences. What is an example?
A
For example the brain’s adaptation to prolonged drug use can lead to poorer cognitive functioning in later life and increased risk of dementia (Medina et al)

Q
Also what happens to amputees?
A
Also 60-80% of amputees develop phantom limb syndrome- the continued experience of sensations in the missing limb as if it were still there. These unpleasant sensations are thought to be due to cortical reorganisation in the somatosensory area. This suggest the brain’s ability to adapt is not always positive.
