Why are needs important?
- Aid priority setting and health service planning
- Important to tap into each type of need to increase the chance of constructing a comprehensive picture of community problems
What are the 4 steps on community & problem analysis?
step 1: consultation
step 2: data collection
step 3: presentation of findings
step 4: determining priorities
What is a normative need?
expert opinion on health standards (eg WHO categories of obesity)
what is a relative need?
Comparison of the level of services in one area as opposed to another similar area (eg level of dietetic service in GC & Bris communities)
what is an expressed need?
The needs of a community as expressed in their health records (eg waiting list for community dietitian consultation)
Felt or perceived needs?
The health needs of a community as perceived by its residents or key community leaders (eg mum reports difficult in accessing fresh healthy food at sporting events)
