Needle Sizes Flashcards
Why is needle size important?
Choose correct size to protect vein and to prevent damage to bloods
What can be caused by too much back pressure?
It will damage the blood cells
Is it possible to damage blood cells with a large needle?
Yes–with too much back pressure
Is it possible to preserve cells with a small needle?
Yes–but you must allow the blood to fill the needle hub & fill crit tubes or GENTLY aspirating with a 1 ml syringe
When is needle/syringe size not crucial?
When the test being done isn’t affected by cellular damage
What does the needle length depend on?
the species being sampled
Needle length for birds/small pets like rabbits/ferrets?
3/8-1/2 inch
Needle length for most dogs & cats (unless obese)?
3/4-1 inch
Needle length for large animal?
1-3 inch
Which species requires a 3” needle?
swine (anterior vena cava)
