Need to know(ch1) Flashcards
What is the descriptive strategy
Observing and describing behavior by naturalistic observation, case studies, and surveys
What is the correlational study
Assess relationships among variables
What are experimental studies
Strategies for inferring cause-and-effect relationships among variables
What is naturalistic observation
Research based on the observation of every day events
What is representative sample
Closely parallels the population on relevant characteristics
What is naturalistic observation
Process of watching something in its natural environment without interacting with the participants and without manipulating the environment
What is a correlational research
Involves measuring two or more variables and assessing the relationships among the variables
What is a sample
A sample is a subset of the population
What is introspection
A training technique used on subjects
What’s an independent variable
Controlled by the experimenter
What is a Dependent variable
Observed and measured
Describe the importance of validity
Validity is whether your study is valid, if your study is not valid, then you throw it away and try again
Describe the importance of reliability
Reliability is when the research of the survey can be repeated. If the results can be replicated over and over, then It demonstrates reliability
Can a study be valid but not reliable or vice versa
No a study has to be valid and reliable just because something is reliable doesn’t mean it’s valid
What is a case study
The use of a descriptive research approach to obtain an in-depth analysis of a person, group, or phenomenon
