Need To Know Flashcards
Largest Body organ as it covers and lines both the inside and outside of the body
INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM (SKIN)
3 Layers of the Skin:
- epidermis- outer layer of the skin
- dermis- second layer of the skin often referred to as the “true skin”
- subcutaneous- third layer of the skin acts as a protector of vital organs and as an insulator
Functions of the Integumentary (skin):
- protection from infection
- regulation of body temperature
- touch/sensation: pain and pressure
- prevention of dehydration
- reservoir for food and water
- creation of vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight
3 Appendages (accessory organs) of the skin:
- The Glands
- sebaceous glands- secrete oil
- sudoriferous- produce sweat
- Hair
- Nails
The muscles are responsible for:
- contribute to posture
- protective covering for the internal organs
- movement
- generation of heat
Skeletal (206 bones) are responsible for:
- framework of the body
- movement
- protection of internal organs
- storing of calcium and other minerals
- production of blood cells within the bone marrow
..is responsible for sending and receiving message between the brain, spinal cord and the nerves
(Switchboard of the body)
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
..is responsible for circulating blood (through the action of the heart pumping) to cells and organs of the body
THE CARDIOVASCULAR (CIRCULATORY) SYSTEM
..is responsible for: *oxygenation of the body *exchange of the respiratory gases: >oxygen >carbon dioxide
THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
..(kidneys) filter the blood removing waste and impurities and the bladder stores the urine until it is excreted from the body
THE URINARY SYSTEM
..is responsible for the intake, breakdown and absorption of nutrients and excretion if waste products
THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
..is the “horse power” of the body, it regulates the body system by use of chemicals and hormones
THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
..has organs for pleasure and for reproduction
THE REPRODUCTION SYSTEM
The special senses include:
- olfaction
- gustation
- vision
- audition-hearing/balance is located here in the semi-circular canals in the ear and the cerebellum in the brain
- touch:pain, pressure and temperature these are general sensations and are not identified you any specific site of the body
..is responsible for sight
THE EYE
