Need to know Flashcards
What happens to hot air
it rises because it is less dense (if it is not contained within a hard walled container)
Why does a tile floor feel colder than a carpeted floor at the same temperature
Because tile is a better heat conductor
What type of heat transfer is most affected by color?
Radiation
What are the three types of heat transfer?
radiation, conduction, convection
Why does water have a high specific heat capacity?
-Takes lots of energy to raise water’s temperature as lots of H bonds must be broken
How do hot air balloons work?
a burner heats the air in the balloon, which causes thermal expansion. This expansion causes some of the partcles inside the balloon to move out the opening in the bottom of the balloon. The air that remains in the balloon is less dense than the air that surrounds it, so the balloon rises. To land, the air inside the balloon is gradually cooled, causing thermal contraction.
Which cools faster: Coffee with creamer, coffee without creamer and why?
Newton’s law of cooling says that the lower temperature coffee with cream has less of a difference in temperature with the surroundings than the coffee with out cream, so a slower rate of cooling.
Water freezing - What happens to the energy?
releases thermal energy
Temperature at which water is densest
4 C
Which is denser ice or water?
Water, ice will float on top of water
Which cools faster: darker colored objects or the lighter colored version of the same object?
Darker materials emit radiation more readily than light-colored materials, so they cool faster.
