What is the dowry prohibition act and what amendments were made to it?
The dowry prohibition act was passed in 1961 to prevent the giving or taking of dowry. ‘Dowry’, as described by the Dowry prohibition act, is the demand for property by the groom’s relatives from the brides’s parents. An amendment was made to this act in 1981 which made the giving or taking of dowry a punishable offence. Another amendment in 1986 stated that anyone convicted under this act could face up to 5 years in prison and also be fined up to 15 thousand rupees or the value of the Dowry, whichever is more.
