Definition and Aetiology?
A
serious illness in which tissues in the intestine (gut) become inflamed and start to die
Occurs due to immature/fragile bowels; RFs: PDA, pre-term
Combination of poor blood flow and infection
starts after enteral feeding.

Who does it affect?
A
premature babies and LBW
20% morbidity and mortality

Early signs?
A
iliary vomiting, feed intolerance
o Abdomen distension
o Blood-stained stool
o Rapid deterioration and shock

Investigations?
A
AXR – ‘gas cysts’ in bowel wall
Blood cultures

Management?
A
Bowel rest - stop oral feed
Broad-spectrum antibiotics
Laparotomy - if perforated
