Neck Muscles Flashcards
Sternocleidomastoid m. innervation
Spinal Accessory Nerve; C2 and C3 nerves (pain and proprioception)
Sternocleidomastoid m. superior attachment
Lateral surface of mastoid process and lateral half of superior nuchal line
Sternocleidomastoid m. inferior attachment
Sternal head: anterior surface of manubrium of sternum
Clavicular head: Superior surface of medial third of clavicle
Sternocleidomastoid m. actions
Unilateral: Tilts head to same side (lateral flexion) and rotates it so face is turned superiorly toward opposite side
Bilateral: 1) extends neck at atlanto-occipital joint (2) flexes cervical vertebrae so that chin approaches manubrium or 3) extends superior cervical vertebrae while flexing inferior vertebrae so chin is thrust forward
Sternohyoid m. innervation
C1-C3 by branch of ansa cervicalis n
Sternohyoid m. origin
Manubrium of sternum and medial end of clavicle
Sternohyoid m. insertion
Body of hyoid
Sternohyoid m. action
Depresses hyoid after elevation during swallowing
Omohyoid m. innervation
C1-C3 by branch of ansa cervicalis n.
Omohyoid m.origin
Superior border of scapula near suprascapular notch
Omohyoid m. insertion
Inferior border of hyoid
Omohyoid m. action
Depresses, retracts, and steadies hyoid
Sternothyroid m. innervation
C2 and C3 by branch of ansa cervicalis n.
Sternothyroid m. origin
Posterior surface of manubrium of sternum
Sternothyroid m. insertion
Oblique line of thyroid cartilage
Sternothyroid m. action
Depresses hyoid and larynx
Longus colli m. innervation
Anterior rami of C2-C6 spinal nerves
Longus colli m. superior attachment
Anterior tubercle of atlas; bodies of C1-C3 and transverse processes of C3-C6 vertebrae
Longus colli m. inferior attachment
Bodies of C5-T3 vertebrae ; transverse processes of C3-C5 vertebrae
Longus colli m. action
Flexes neck with rotation to opposite side if acting unilaterally
Longus capitis m. innervation
Anterior rami of C1-C3 spinal nerves
Longus capitis m. superior attachment
Basilar part of occipital bone
Longus capitis m. inferior attachment
Anterior tubercles of C3-C6 transverse processes
Longus capitis m. action
Flex head
Anterior scalene m. innervation
Cervical spinal nerves C4-C6
Anterior scalene m. superior attachment
Transverse processes of C4-C6 vertebrae
Anterior scalene m. inferior attachment
1st rib
Anterior scalene m. action
Flexes head
Middle Scalene m. innervation
Anterior rami of cervical spinal nerves
Middle scalene m. superior attachment
Posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C4-C6 vertebrae
Middle scalene m. inferior attachment
Superior surface of 1st rib; posterior groove for subclavian artery
Middle scalene m. action
Flexes neck laterally; elevates 1st rib during forced inspiration
Posterior scalene m. innervation
Anterior rami of cervical spinal nerves C7 and C8
Posterior scalene m. superior attachment
Posterior tubercles of transverse processes of C4-C6 vertebrae
Posterior scalene m. inferior attachment
External border of 2nd rib
Posterior scalene m. action
Flexes neck laterally; elevates 2nd rib during forced inspiration
