necessary and sufficient conditions Flashcards
necessary conditions
x is a necessary condition for y if the presence of x is required for the presence of y
something you need in order to have something
eg you cant have rain without water
however water doesn’t guarantee rain hence water is necessary but not sufficient condition for rain
sufficient conditions is when a condition is met an effect is guaranteed
eg, being an aunt guarantees relatives but it is not necessary to be an aunt to have relatives
some conditions are both necessary and jointly sufficient.
x and y are sufficient conditions for z if the presence of x and y guarantees the presence of z
never been married and being a man are necessary and jointly sufficient conditions for being a bachelor.
you can not be a bachelor if the conditions are met, both conditions need to be met.
