NCIDQ Prac Flashcards
Work Letter
Part of lease agreement between tenant and owner of a commercial space
Programming concepts
Statements about functional solutions to the client’s performance requirements
Gestalt Psychology
Humans innately perceive things as a whole so that what is perceived individual bits of stimulus but to the whole, and that people actively add structure to what they see rather than just reacting to it. Figure ground
Components of concept design
- plan arrangement: open, linear, axial, centralized, grid, clustered
- space relationships: adjacent, overlapping, sharing a common space, space within a space
Programming
Identifies these relationships and assigns them a heirachy of importance
3 types of adjacency needs
1-people
2-products
3-information
Space Planning
Process used to translate programmatic needs and broad design concepts into a physical plan of the space by organizing major rooms and areas, determining circulation systems and laying out furniture
Organizing Concepts
1-linear
2- Grid
3- axial
4- central
Circulation concepts
1) dumbbell: simplistic and most flexible
2) doughnut: complete loop for larger groups/spaces, very efficient
3) radial: used with a major space being the focal point
Check list of common requirements in space planning
1) number of exits
2) spacing of exits
3) exit width
4) door clearance in corridor
5) corridor width
6) avoid dead end corridors
7) minimize length of corridors
8) accessibility clearance and door clearance
Distance between 2 exits
Non- Sprinklered = 1/2 the diagonal distance
sprinklered 1/3 the diagonal distance
Corridor width
Residential: 36”
Commercial: 44”
Suggested 60” for exam
Dead end corridor
20ft max
50ft max with sprinkler
Proximics
Interrelated observations and theories about how people use space as specialized elaboration of culture. Deals with - spaces between people - territoriality - organization of space - positioning of people in space
Created by Edward T Hall
Territoriality
Peoples need to lag claim to spaces they occupy and the things they own.
Maslows theory
2 main needs
1) deficiency needs
2) growth needs
Group Interaction
The environment can facilitate or hinder human interaction. If the space does not provide interaction people will modify the environment or behavior
Efficiency Factor
Mathematical ratio of one area to another.
Net area to occupant area
Office/retail space is 0.70 to 0.80
