NCIDQ Prac Flashcards
Work Letter
Part of lease agreement between tenant and owner of a commercial space
Programming concepts
Statements about functional solutions to the client’s performance requirements
Gestalt Psychology
Humans innately perceive things as a whole so that what is perceived individual bits of stimulus but to the whole, and that people actively add structure to what they see rather than just reacting to it. Figure ground
Components of concept design
- plan arrangement: open, linear, axial, centralized, grid, clustered
- space relationships: adjacent, overlapping, sharing a common space, space within a space
Programming
Identifies these relationships and assigns them a heirachy of importance
3 types of adjacency needs
1-people
2-products
3-information
Space Planning
Process used to translate programmatic needs and broad design concepts into a physical plan of the space by organizing major rooms and areas, determining circulation systems and laying out furniture
Organizing Concepts
1-linear
2- Grid
3- axial
4- central
Circulation concepts
1) dumbbell: simplistic and most flexible
2) doughnut: complete loop for larger groups/spaces, very efficient
3) radial: used with a major space being the focal point
Check list of common requirements in space planning
1) number of exits
2) spacing of exits
3) exit width
4) door clearance in corridor
5) corridor width
6) avoid dead end corridors
7) minimize length of corridors
8) accessibility clearance and door clearance
Distance between 2 exits
Non- Sprinklered = 1/2 the diagonal distance
sprinklered 1/3 the diagonal distance
Corridor width
Residential: 36”
Commercial: 44”
Suggested 60” for exam
Dead end corridor
20ft max
50ft max with sprinkler
Proximics
Interrelated observations and theories about how people use space as specialized elaboration of culture. Deals with - spaces between people - territoriality - organization of space - positioning of people in space
Created by Edward T Hall
Territoriality
Peoples need to lag claim to spaces they occupy and the things they own.
Maslows theory
2 main needs
1) deficiency needs
2) growth needs
Group Interaction
The environment can facilitate or hinder human interaction. If the space does not provide interaction people will modify the environment or behavior
Efficiency Factor
Mathematical ratio of one area to another.
Net area to occupant area
Office/retail space is 0.70 to 0.80
Maximum Travel Distance
The distance that an occupant would have to travel to get from the most remote point to the nearest entrance to an exit.
Based on occupancy and if the building is sprinklered
Common path of egress travel
The portion of the exit access travel distance measures from a remote point to the point where occupants can choose which direction to go.
Vinyl wallcovering grades
Type-I: light duty
Type-II: medium duty for restaurant and commercial
Type III: heavy duty for public corridors and hospitals
AHJ requirements on first page of drawings
1) names and addresses of all design professionals
2) street address or legal description of property
3) codes being used
4) area of space designed
5) construction type and occupancy group(s)
6) occupant load calculations
7) sprinklered or not
8) valuation
Drawings required by AHJ
1) floor plan
2) elevations
3) sections
4) details for architectural
5) structural dwg
6) MEP dwg
When do you use an upright head sprinkler
Exposed pipes and high exposed ceilings
Sprinkler Spacing
Every 15ft. To cover 225 sqft
No sprinkler further than 7’6” from wall.
Safety Glazing
Tempered and laminated
Fire-protection-rated glazing
Wired glass in steel frames.
45min rating in 1hr fire rated partition/barriers.
Used to separate occupancy or incidental use area
Limited to 25% of length of common wall.
Fire-resistance-rated glazing
Can be rated up to 2 hours in partitions rated higher then 1 hour.
1) clear ceramic / laminated
2) tempered (max 30min)
3) 2-3 layers of tempered with polymer gel
4) glass block
Ergonomics
The study of relation between human physiology and the physical environment.
Uses information developed by anthropomorphics
Anthropomorphics
The measurement of the size, proportions and range of motion in the human body
All-air system
Cool or heat spaces by conditioned air alone.
Uses VAV boxes
All Water System
Uses a coil unit called a convector in each space
Mixing Box
Adjusts the quality or temperature of air going through the space
Terminal reheat system
Combination of water and conditioned air
Effective daylighting depth
2.5 x height from floor to top of window
What seismic design categories require additional ceiling details
C, D & E
Block Plan
Shows an approximate layout of spaces with squares generally drawn to scale
Concept diagram
Developed based on adjacency diagram that shows entrances, exits, major spaces, general concepts for circulation
Required number of exits
Occupant Load Occupancy is the space Length of common path of egress travel Sprinklers Specific requirements
Rating of glass in 1hr. Corridor
3/4 hr rating. Less thank 25%

Fire rated doors
1 hr partition = 20min door
1 hr partition separating occupancy = 3/4 hr. Rates

Occupant area calculation
Occupant area = net area / efficiency factors
Rentable area calculation
Occupant area x load factor
