What is meant by construction work?
Construction work includes building work; renovation; structural alteration; maintenance; decommissioning; civil engineering and works of engineering construction; and dismantling and demolition.
What activities are involved in construction work?
Site clearance - removal of bricks, hardcore, scrap materials.
Excavation, including earthworks, trenches, wells, shafts, tunnels or underground working.
Loading, unloading, handling and storage of equipment and construction materials.
Site movements of people, plant, machinery and vehicles.
Use of access equipment, e.g. ladders and stepladders, working platforms, scaffolding, cradles, mobile platforms, crawling boards, gangways, trestles, suspended access equipment, etc.
Fabrication, assembly or disassembly of parts of a structure.
Decoration or redecoration following completion of work.
Cleaning involving high-pressure water or corrosive substances.
Installation, removal and maintenance of services (electricity, water, gas, compressed air, telecommunications, computer or similar services).
Landscaping of grounds following completion of work or as part of a project.
What are the five stages of a construction project?
Concept and feasibility - design and layout, construction methods involved.
Design and planning - specifications required, final drawings, notification to authorities (unless exempt).
Tender/selection - selection process for the Principal Contractor.
Construction phase - planning, programming and preparing the construction work, and then starting, carrying out and managing the work involved.
Commissioning and handover - all activities involved in ending the project and handing over to the client.
Who are the five duty holders under CDM 2015 Regs?
The five duty holders are the client, the designers, the principal designer, the principal contractor and contractors.
When is a project notifiable to HSE?
The HSE is notified of a project if the construction work in it will last longer than 30 working days and have more than 20 workers on the project. Or if it will involve more than 500 person days.
When do CDM Regs apply?
CDM 2015 applies to all construction work.
What documents do CDM Regs require to be prepared?
The two documents that are required by the CDM Regulations are the construction phase health and safety plan and the health and safety file.
What are three key areas into which the consequences of poor health and safety fall?
The three key areas are: moral, legal and financial.
Identify two risk areas in construction that have a high injury incidence rate?
Risk areas of high-injury incidence include:
Falls from height.
Slips, trips and falls.
Being struck by falling/moving objects.
Manual handling.
Historically, which type of accident kills the most construction workers?
Falling from height
