NBS, climate change and natural climate solutions Flashcards
What are some key interventions (Griscom et al)?
Reforestation
Avoided forest conservation
Avoided peat impacts
How is the potential success of interventions measured?
Climate change potential- with co2 equivalents other gases
Is reforestation a good intervention strategy?
Best intervention, not cheap, best potential to sequester carbon
Why is avoided peat impacts a good intervention strategy?
Preserving peat bogs, keeping those from emitting more ghgh is a very important NBS for the UK
What is avoided deforestation?
Protecting areas from deforestation in the cheapest NCS, is it the most effective NCS, but it is not easy to measure its success
What is a REDD scheme?
Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degredation
Do REDD schemes work?
Analysis of 40 projects showed decreased deforestation in 34 sites and increases in 6 sites
On averge it reduced deforestation relative to what would have occured but only 0.1-0.3% which is very minimal
What is carbon offsetting?
A market for NCS where you pay to offset the carbon you produced by paying for a new NCS that takes up the carbon
Why doesn’t carbon offsetting work?
Additionality calaculation from company were very wrong, the reference area in which they compared to the project area, as it was an area without roads, with forest protecting it, reference area has lots of deforestation due to roads and rivers
What are the two biggest reforestation projects?
Bonn challenge
Trillion trees initative
What did Basin et al,suggest in their idea of tree planting as a NCS?
Could increase tree cover globally by 25%
Sequester 205 of the 300 of GTC
Not include urban or agricultural land
