International Shipping of Human Remains
Requires an apostille: the officially accepted certification used internationally.
First step: notify consulate of receiving country.
Sometimes: “No contagious diseases” affidavit along with embalming certificate.
When US receives: state department is notified by consular officer/consulate—they then contact family or representative
Identification Viewing
Involves a member (or members) if immediate family, who confirm ID of deceased before cremation. Must sign legal form specific to state in which death occurred.
Rental casket vs. Alternative caskets
RENTAL CASKET: a specially designed casket with cardboard container inside for cremains.
ALT CONTAINERS: designed for direct disposition, constructed of lightweight fiberboard or corrugated cardboard.
Traditional cremation
Body is present at funeral, and cremation takes place afterward. A common choice, and often includes embalming for the visitation or viewing.
Direct cremation
No funeral service held prior to cremation. No viewing, except as required for ID.
Memorial service vs. Memorial gathering
SERVICE: a tribute to the deceased’s life without the body present. Can take place whenever after death.
GATHERING: an informal service to remember the life of a loved one.
Green burial
The act of interring a body that has not been embalmed in a biodegradable casket or bag in a specifically designated section of a cemetery. Minimal environmental impact.
Cryonics
A procedure that preserves the tissue of the deceased in extreme low temperatures with the j tent if restoring it to life at a future date with advances in medical science.
Resomation
Alkaline hydrolysis. The process of reducing the body tissues to bone fragments with pressure and water.
Disposition of cremated remains
EARTH BURIAL: ground disposition
MAUSOLEUM: for when one person chooses casket burial, but another chooses an urn, and they are entombed in a single crypt
COLUMBARIUM: a structure dedicated for inurnment of cremates remains only
SCATTERING: dispersion over ground or sea
Casket
An inflexible, decorative container made of wood, metal, or similar material with an interior lining.
Coffin
An inflexible container usually made of wood, co strutted to be wide at the shoulders and narrow at the feet.
Air tray
Constructed with a solid wood base and a corrugated cardboard covering to protect a casket during transport.
Combination case
Constructed of particle wood with a cardboard tray for transportation by air.
Ziegler case
Designed for advanced decomposition and includes a gasket seal. This case is inserted into a casket or used as a separate shipping container.
