Death Heads Units controlled concentration camps.
Waffen SS fought alongside army.

A

Could arrest anybody who opposed the Nazis and any opposition so made Germans scared to oppose the Nazis
Ran concentration camps and fighting sections
Prevented rebellions
Could arrest people without trial
Intimidating black uniforms

Who were Informers?

A

Block wardens in towns, who would visit the different houses and collect donations for the Nazi Party.

What was the impact of the Informers? How did they control the Germans?

A

Wrote reports on people that would determine what job they would have, scared people into being a good Nazi so they stayed employed.
Reported any anti-Nazi behaviors, e.g. not saluting or putting up the Swastika flag.
Those accused were mainly killed in concentration camps.

What were Concentration Camps?

A

Specialised prisons that help Communists, anti-Nazis, Jews etc.
Slave Labor, Torture, Manufacturing weapons.
First one opened in Dachau in 1933.

What was the impact of Concentration Camps? How did they control the Germans?

A

Made Germans scared to go against the Nazis as they feared for there lives.
Got rid of people who could spread anti-Nazi ideals further
Stopped individuals from starting a revolution as they were locked away.
Many prisoners died of starvation in these camps.

What were Police and Courts in the Nazi era?

A

Judges had to take an oath of loyalty to Hitler and the courts were now run by Nazis.
They had to display the Swastika.
Liberal or Jewish judges were replaced by Nazi supporters.

A

Dettered people from committing crimes against the Nazis and following their ideals.
Death penalty for some crimes eg Having a sexual relationship with a Jew.
500 opponents of Hitler were sentenced to death.

A

Secret State Police run by Himmler.
Tapped into mail, telephone etc and used torture to spy on German behaviour.
Their job was to search out opponents to the Nazis.

A

Rumors were spread and people were scared of being caught.
Stopped people from gaining ideas of rebellions by killing the leaders.
Gestapo could arrest anyone and send them to concentration camps without trial.

A

Stop paying reparations.
Autarky-Achieve complete self sufficiency.
Four Year Plan to get the economy ready for war
with industrial production.
“Guns before Butter”- Rearmament for the war.
Full employment.

A

Jews were sacked and their jobs given to Aryan men.
Women were also sacked.
Beauty of Work programme encouraged people to work and to see that it was good.
By introducing conscription into the German Army.

A

Strength through joy, gave workers rewards eg theatre trips, holidays.
Public Works Programme, new motorways, schools and hospitals payed for by the Nazis.
Volkswagen Bettle, monthly payments that could lead up to getting a car.

What was the National Labour service?

A

A service for 18 year olds where they could live in lodgings and help dig ditches and get food.
After sixth months the men were conscripted into the amy.

What was the National Labours Front?

A

Abolishment of trade unions and the creation of one organisation run by the Nazis.
Better living conditions, lunches and toilets etc
However workers had no rights and the DAF did whatever the employers wanted.
Set wages and working hours.

What was the 4 year plan?

A

Prepare for war in 4 years.
Run by Goerring to make Germany self sufficent with Autarky.
Increase production of raw materials, reduce imports.
Germans still depended on foreign imports for 1/3 of its raw materials.
Motto was “Guns before Butter”, but in 1939 butter was still rationed (shows they have not got a very stable/good/fair economy system controlled by the Nazis).

Who was better off because of the Nazis economic plans?

A

Big business benefited from the increase in working hours and employment aswell as decrease in wages.
Unskilled workers were no longer unemployed
Farmers benefited from increase in food price because of the 4 year plan and self sufficiency.

Who was worse off because of the Nazi economic plans?

A

Unemployed people would no longer receive benefits.

Because wages were lower and food prices were higher many people lived in poverty.

What positive effects did Nazis controlling economy have?

A
  • Big businesses befitted and the average salary of managers rose by nearly 70% between the years 1933 and 1938.
  • Unskilled workers were mostly given jobs and even though wages were low and work was hard, they at least had a job.
  • Some farm debts were written off and all farmers benefited from an increase in food prices.
  • The value of the trade of self-employed skilled craftsmen nearly doubled between 1922 and 1937.

What negative impacts did the Nazis controlling economy have?

A
  • Farmers resented government’s meddling in setting quotas.
  • Unskilled workers were given no choice about their job - if they did not accept the government programme they were assigned, they would receive no unemployment benefit, which was sometimes higher than the wage on the scheme.
  • The government also took control of prices, wages, profit and imports which was resented by some businessmen.

What was the New Plan and what was a disadvantage of it?

A
  • Run by Dr Schacht from 1933-1934, the aim was to limit imports, make trade agreements and reduce unemployment.
  • It was successful but Hitler was annoyed that Schacht told him that Germany could not afford to rearm as quickly.
