Describe the different types of propaganda [4]
Goebbels was in charge. He organised the Nuremburg rallies, 1936 Olympics to show superiority of Aryan race. He took control of the media (films/newspapers/radio) to get over the Nazis message.
Describe the events of the Night of the Long Knives [4]
The SA were seen as a rival by the German army and wanted Hitler to take action. On 30 June 1934 the SS murdered over 400 SA leaders inc. Rohm. Hitler took full responsibility. One month later the German army swore an oath of loyalty.
Describe how some church leaders opposed the Nazis [4]
Bishop Galen led many protests against Nazi policy of killing the mentally ill. He had a lot of Catholic supporters. Pastor Niemoller formed an alternative church with Dietrich Bonhoeffer. They gave speeches that attacked Nazi policies. Bonhoeffer helped many Jews to escape.
What were the main features of the Nazi Police State? [4]
SS; Gestapo; courts and police; concentration camps.
Describe the work of Goebbels [4]
In charge of propaganda. His job was to spread Nazi ideas and encourage loyalty to the Nazis. He controlled all media such as film and radio. He organised mass rallies and the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
What were the main features of the education of children between 1933 and 1945? [4]
Children were taught that the Aryan race was superior. School curriculum and textbooks were rewritten to support Nazi ideas. Parents were encouraged to allow their children to join youth groups where they were indoctrinated with Nazi beliefs.
What did the Nazis do to reduce unemployment? [4]
Thousands of Germans were employed in public works schemes I.e roads, houses, hospitals built. Many took over jobs previously held by Jews. Conscription was introduced. Armament factories were set up to ensure enough weapons for the army.
Explain why some young people opposed Nazi policies between 1933 and 1945 [6]
Edelweiss pirates disliked Nazi control over their lives. They went camping but often attacked Hitler youth. They were working class and had a different ideology. Middle class kids known as swing kids didn’t want to follow Nazi policy; they listened to jazz, and wore US style clothing.
Explain why women were important in Hitler’s plans for Germany [6]
They were crucial to increasing the population. They were encouraged to have large families. Women needed to stay at home and raise loyal young Nazis.
Explain why Hitler carried out the Night of the Long Knives [6]
The German army saw the SA as a threat and a rival. It wanted them removed. The SA had different views to Hitler and wanted more reform. Rohm was a direct threat to Hitler as he had millions of SA under his control.
Explain why the Nazis persecuted different groups in society. [6]
Anyone who didn’t fit with the Aryan race:
Jews: considered subhuman and blamed for Germany’s problems.
Mentally ill: were a drain on society
Homosexuals: couldn’t contribute to the master race
Explain why Hitler consisted Rohm and the SA to be a threat [6]
The German army saw the SA as a threat and rival. It wanted the SA removed.
They disagreed on policy. The SA wanted more reform.
Rohm was a direct threat to Hitler as he had millions of men under his control.
Explain why young people joined the Hitler Youth [6]
Encouraged by their parents. It helped to show loyalty.
It offered them a sense of adventure e.g hiking, camping.
Basic army training appealed to many youngsters.
Why was the Hitler youth important to the Nazis? [6]
It was a form of control linked to education policy.
It ensured young people grew up loyal to Hitler. They would be the future Nazis. They would develop skills to become future soldiers. They could snitch on disloyal parents.
Explain why Kristallnacht took place [6]
It was revenge for the murder of a German diplomat in Paris by a Jew. Thousands of businesses and properties were attacked in Nov 1938. It was part of the Nazi policy against the Jews. It was the start of violence against the Jews and showed how much control Hitler had (there was little opposition)
