Who were the SA and how did they help Hitler come to power?
They were founded by Hitler in 1921 out of various roughneck elements, mainly ex-soldiers, that battled leftists in the streets. They helped Hitler to gain power in 1933 by attacking political rivals and intimidating voters. However, Hitler eliminated the SA in 1934 in the Night of the Long Knives.
