In 1933 the Reichstag building burned down, and a communist called van der lubbe was blamed for it- and four thousand communists were arrested.
Gave hitler an excuse to propose the enabling act to give himself total power to make laws- meaning Germany was no longer a democracy but a dictatorship
The night of the Long Knives and the SA
CAUSES:
Rohm did not like Hitler’s policies
SA members felt bitter due to them being undervalued
SS wanted to decrease power of SA in order to gain power for themselves.
SA was much bigger than the army and the army felt threatened by them.
EVENTS:
Hitler invited Rohm and 100 SA members to a meeting in 1934. They were arrested upon arrival and taken to be shot. Von Shleicher was also killed.
