Hitler arrived at an SA meeting and told his chauffer to keep the engine running, in case he needed to get away quickly.
He marched in, found Rohm and arrested him along with other leaders of the SA.
Rohm and 400 others were executed.
What were the causes of the Night of the Long Knives?
Hitler feared that Rohm was becoming too powerful and was a threat to him.
The SA was bigger than the army, unruly and loyal to Rohm.
Rohm was aggressive and drank heavily. He was hated by many other important Nazis.
Rohm wanted the revolution to continue. Hitler did not.
How did the Reichstag fire help Hitler to consolidate his power?
It destroyed documents about the Nazis in the 1920s.
It provided an excuse to get rid of opposition (the communists).
Other parties became scared of Hitler.
How did Hitler make sure people voted for the Nazis in the elections of March 1933?
Stormtroopers were used to intimidate voters at polling stations.
Other parties had to give 48 hours of notice for meetings so that the SA could be sent to break them up and no one could hear what the opposition was promising.
