NAVOSH pt 2 Flashcards
Define Heat Stress
Any combination of air temperature, thermal radiation, humidity, airflow, and work load which stress the body as it attempts to regulate temperature.
Enviromental Factors that cause heat stress
Humidity
- Steam Leaks
- bilge water
- condensations.
define acclimatization
the act of becoming accustomed to temperature or a new environment.
normally takes 3 weeks or more.
Personal Factors associated with heat stress
Current health status and use of meds may alter the physiological body changes
-G6PD/Sickle Cell/exercise and fluid intake/medications/alcohol/lack of sleep/drugs
Common Spaces heat stress occurs on a ship
Machinery/laundries/sculleries/incinerator room/flight decks/
Causes and contributors to heat stress conditions
Steam and water leaks boiler air casing leaks ventilation deficiencies weather conditions arduous operations
What is the PHEL chart
a set of 6 curves that compare the WBGT index and the degree of effort or work rate to determine the maximum permissible exposure to the heat stress enviorment.
Who creates the PHEL Curve and work rates?
Industrial hygenist and NAVSEA
Define Recovery time as it pertains to heat stress.
A minimum of twice the stay time as determined by the PHEL chart or 4 hours whichever is shorter.
What are the minimum trainings required for heat stress training?
Hazards symptoms and exposure heat stress first aid heat stress monitoring causes of heat stress
How do you report heat stress injuries?
Accident and injury report
Report to the naval safety center using WESS
report to Naval disease reporting system
medical event report
Heat stress survey requirements
All reports will be reviewed by the SMDR
-Supervisor or Engineering Officer of the Watch will make notation of any existing problems and corrective actions implemented.
If a heat stress survey is conducted and it requires reduced stay times who needs to approve this?
Commanding Officer.
How long does the SMDR keep the survey reports?
1 year
What is a hazard
a work place condition that might result in injury, health impairment, illness, disease, or death to any worker who is exposed to the condition or which might result in damage to or loss of property or equipment
Hazard Severity
an assessment of the worst potential consequences is likely to occur as a result of deficiencies.
Injury
a traumatic would or other condition of the body caused by external force including stress or strain
Mishap probability
the likelihood that a mishap will occur.
Near Mishap
an act or event which injury or damage was avoided merely by chance.
Web Enabled Safety System WESS
Developed by COMNAVSAFECEN
Mishap Inventigation and reporting intructions
DODI6055.07
Mishap notification, investigation, reporting and record keeping
Mishap investigation and reporting purposes
to identify hazards with the potential to cause frequent and severe mishaps
- identify hazards that could cause future mishaps
- identify unsafe acts and conditions and apply corrective measures.
- identify mishap causal factors and develop appropriate corrective actions.
Investigation and reporting required conditions
all government Motor Vehicle or government vehicle mishaps resulting in 5000 dollars or more government vehicle/property/private vehicle/ private property damage.
Investigation and reporting required conditions
Work related significant threshold shift in hearing
10 Db or more
Class A Mishap
2 million or more in damage
- dod aircraft destroyed
- injury or illness resulting a fatality or permanent total disability
Class B mishap
500,000 to 2 million in damage
- injury or illness resulting in permanent partial disability
- three or more personal are hospitalized for inpatient care as a result of a single mishap
Class C mishap
- 50,000 to 500,000 in damages cost
- recordable injury or illness not otherwise classified as a A/B/C mishap
Mishap report types
Accident and injury report
Safety Investigation report SIREP
Hazard Report
What are the steps when a mishap occurs resulting in an investigation?
The safety officer makes sure Investigation is conducted.
- ISIC or higher authority appoints mishap investigation board
- minimum of 3 team members
- if fatality medical member may be appointed to the board
- MIR must be submitted within 30 days if Naval Safety Center.
Occupational Injury Recording Forms
- Sf 600
- ETR SF 558 Emergency treatment record
- Sf 513 Consultation
- Accident and Injury report
the Objectives of the Hazardous Materials Control and Management Program
in order to comply with CNO direction, all us navy ships are required to implement the consolidated hazardous material reutilization and inventory management program.
CHRIMP Purpose
HAZMAT control management program that requires hazmat to be centrally controlled onboard the ships and subs.
HAZMINCENs installations
part of CHRIMP
Requires the establishment/installation of Hazardous Material Minimization Centers on ships for centralized management of shipboard hazardous waste materials.
DOD 6050.5LR
Proprietary or Restricted Information
-access required both user ID and Pass code
DOD 6050.5L
Non-Proprietary or unclassified information
-requires only user ID
Medical department responsibilities concerning HAZMAT Control Program
Maintain Hard Copies of SDS or CD ROM
Safety Data Sheet Purpose
contains information about materials such as
-composition, chemical and physical characteristics, health and safety hazards, and precaustions for safe use. LOT NUMBER AND EXP DATES ARE NOT FOUND ON SDS
Important sections of SDS
Company name, address, emergency phone contact
- chemical identity, common name
- fire and explosion hazards
- precautions for safe handling and use
Health requirements aboard a ship
use the medical matrix in determining the proper medical screening required for individual workers.
Medical examinations
target specific body organs or organ systems potentially subject to HM whether by inhalation, ingestion, absorption or other routes
-elements of exam-Pertinent medical history, specific ancillary tests and hands on exam
National fire protection association label

-Class III or IV Laser workers.
Designation of eye hazard areas
Deck stripping
- 2 to 3 inch yellow and black striped or checkerboard tape.
- Caution Eye Protection required in this area.
Chemical Goggles
Provide protection from liquids, splashes, mists, and sprays
-goggles may be a flexible or rigid frame with a separate, cushioned fitting surface held in place by a supporting band.
chipping goggles
Provide protection from a relatively large flying object such as grinding, chipping or chiseling.
Ballistic eye protection
may replace standard safety glasses.
protection for high impact situations
Requirements for sight protection equipment
American national standards institute compliance.
Z-87 must appear on all eye wear.
Temporary eyewear
command maintains sufficient quantity for visitors, workers, and personnel awaiting prescription lenses.
