Navigation Flashcards
WHAT DOES VMS STAND FOR?
Voyage Management System
WHAT DOES GPS STAND FOR?
Global Positioning System
DEFINE TRUE BEARING
A bearing relative to true North
DEFINE RELATIVE BEARING
A bearing relative to the ship meaning that the bow bears 000 at all times
DEFINE FIX
The ship’s position determined without reference to any former position
WHAT DOES D.R. STAND FOR?
Dead Reckoning
WHY IS DEAD RECKONING IMPORTANT?
It helps determine possible encounters with hazards to navigation (e.g. buoys, fish havens, shipwrecks, etc.)
DEFINE SET AND DRIFT
Set - The direction the ship is being pushed off course
Drift - The speed at which the ship is being pushed off course
WHAT ARE RULES OF THE ROAD?
A manual used to determine how to safely navigate through inland and international waters.
WHO PUBLISHES RULES OF THE ROAD?
The Coast Guard
WHAT ARE DAY SHAPES?
Large, black shapes that tell other vessels in our vicinity that our ship is in a special circumstance where extra precautions are needed to keep them and us safe
WHAT ARE THEIR NIGHTTIME EQUIVALENTS?
Ball - Equal to a red light
Diamond - Equal to a white light
DEFINE DIW
Dead In the Water. It means we have no means of propulsion.
WHO ORDERS ABANDON SHIP?
The Commanding Officer
NAME THE ARC OF VISIBILITY FOR THE FOLLOWING LIGHTS:
Masthead light: 225 degrees
Port and starboard running lights: 112.5 degrees each
Stern light: 135 degrees
(NOTE: The total of the masthead light and the stern light=360 degrees)
HOW MANY BUOYAGE SYSTEMS ARE THERE
2; Lateral and Cardinal
WHAT ARE COLREGS AND WHAT DO THEY DICTATE?
Collision Regulations at Sea. They dictate the location of Lines of Demarcation which separate inland and international waters. Once a Line of Demarcation is crossed, the Rules of the Road change.
WHAT DOES SOPA MEAN?
Senior Officer Present Afloat. When two ships are moored to the same pier, SOPA is determined by who has the most senior officer embarked.
DEFINE LINES OF LATITUDE.
Lines of parallels that run East to West and are measured North to South (0-90 degrees)
WHAT IS THE REFERENCE LINE FOR ALL LINES OF LATITUDE?
The Equator
DEFINE LINES OF LONGITUDE
Lines of Meridians that run North to South and are measured East to West (0-180 degrees)
WHAT IS THE REFERENCE LINE FOR ALL LINES OF LONGITUDE?
The Prime Meridian
DEFINE GMT.
Greenwich (pronounced GREN-ich) Mean Time. Also known as “Zulu” or UTC (coordinated universal time). The basis or origin of longitude measurement. It is mean solar time measured with reference to the 0° meridian of longitude located at Greenwich, England.
HOW MANY TIME ZONES ARE THERE?
24
HOW MANY TIME ZONE DESIGNATORS ARE THERE?
- (A time zone designator tells you where you are in location to GMT and helps you figure out what the local time is for a certain area. For example: If my time zone designator is -4D, I know that I am four hours east of GMT. If my time zone designator is +5R, I know I am five hours west of GMT.)
WHICH TIME ZONE DESIGNATOR IS NOT USED?
JULIET
WHAT IS OUR PRIMARY MEANS OF NAVIGATION?
GPS
NAME THE STATIONS FOR QMs DURING SEA AND ANCHOR DETAIL.
Nav Evaluator - Responsible for making course change recommendations to the Conning Officer to keep the ship on its Plan of Intended Movement (PIM) track based off information given by the Nav Plotter
Nav Plotter - Plots the ship’s position based off bearings given to the Bearing Book Recorder
Bearing Book Recorder - Records bearings received from the Bearing Takers
Bearing Taker - Uses a telescopic alidade to get true bearing from aids to navigation
Deck Log Recorder - Responsible for recording every occurrence during sea and anchor detail including set and drift every three minutes
Signal Bridge Personnel - Responsible for all flaghoist during sea and anchor
WHAT IS THE JOB OF THE NAVIGATOR?
Overall in charge of maintaining safe navigation of the ship. Advises the CO, TAO and OOD as to the ship’s movements and supervises navigation of the ship when in restricted waters or during General Quarters
WHERE IS THE BRIDGE LOCATED?
08 Level
NAME THE WATCHSTANDERS ON THE BRIDGE
Officer of the Deck - Overall in charge of everyone on the bridge. He/She is the one you will call for permission to execute everyday shipboard operations (e.g. dumping metal over the side), 911 and Man Overboard. Also coordinates with TAO (for tactical operations) and EOOW (for propulsion plant line-up).
Conning Officer - Drives (“conns”) the ship. Gives orders to helmsman/lee helmsman, determines appropriate course and speed changes when engaged in special evolutions e.g. flight operations, sea and anchor, UNREP
Jr. Officer of the Watch - Responsible for maintaining all communications with other vessels in our vicinity, watches radars and AIS, alerts other vessels as to our intentions
Helmsman - Drives the ship
Lee Helmsman - Changes the speed of the ship
Boatswain’s Mate of the Watch - Overall in charge of all Deck watch team members, rings bells, pipes and passes words over the 1MC
Quartermaster of the Watch - Eyes and ears of the Navigator when he’s not on the bridge, direct assistant to the Officer of the Deck in maintaining safe navigation
WHAT ARE THE WAYS QUARTERMASTERS CAN COMMUNICATE VISUALLY?
Flaghoist
Flashing Light
Semaphore
HOW MANY SEARCHLIGHTS DO WE HAVE ONBOARD?
6
HOW MANY FLAG BAGS DO WE HAVE ONBOARD?
2
