Nausea, Vomiting, Indigestion Flashcards
A medullary nucleus that responds to bloodborne emetic stimuli and is termed the chemoreceptor trigger zone
Area postrema
Diagnosis: nausea and vomiting after weight loss or prolonged bed rest
Superior mesenteric artery syndrome
Most common form of gastroparesis; may follow a viral prodrome
Idiopathic
Diagnosis: nausea without vomiting occurring several times weekly in the absence of organic abnormalities
Chronic idiopathic nausea
Diagnosis: one or more vomiting episodes weekly in the absence of an eating disorder or psychiatric disease
Functional vomiting
Cyclic vomiting syndrome has a strong association with this condition
Migraine headache
Most prevalent endocrinologic cause of nausea
Pregnancy
Treatment for anticipatory nausea and vomiting with chemotherapy
Lorazepam (benzodiazepines)
A neurokinin 1 receptor antagonist used for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting
Aprepitant
A D2 antagonist with prokinetic and antiemetic effects but does not cross into most other brain regions; thus, anxiety and dystonic reactions are rare
Domperidone
Main side effect of domperidone
Hyperprolactinemia
Most common causes of indigestion (2)
Gastroesophageal reflux and functional dyspepsia
A hereditary disorder associated with development of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
Tylosis
Diagnosis: fullness occurring after normal-sized meals and early satiety that prevents completion of regular meals, with bloating, belching, or nausea
Postprandial distress syndrome
Test done by blind perfusion of saline and then acid into the esophagus to delineate whether unexplained chest discomfort results from acid reflux
Bernstein test
