Natures Chemistry Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound containing hydrogen and carbon atoms only
Describe the homologous series
Homologous series have similar chemical properties and the same general formula
What is the general formula for Alkanes?
CnH2n+2
General formula for Alkenes?
CnH2n
General formula for Cyloalkanes?
CnH2n
General formula for Alkanols?
CnH2n+1 OH
General formula for Carboxyls?
CnH2n+1 COOH
List the alkane family 1-8
1- Methane 2- Ethane 3- Propane 4- Butane 5- Pentane 6- Hexane 7- Heptane 8- Octane
List the alkene family 1-8
1- Methene 2- Ethene 3- Propene 4- Butene 5- Pentene 6- Hexene 7- Heptene 8- Octene

1- Methanol 2- Ethanol 3- Propanol 4- Butanol 5- Pentanol 6- Hexanol 7- Heptanol 8- Octanol
How to make an ester?
alcohol + Carboxylic acid = ester + water
Change the alochol to end in “yl” and the carboxylic acid ends in “oate”
What is an Isomer?
Isomers have the same molecular formula but different structure. Such as Alkenes and cycloalkanes
What is the general formula for the carboxyl group ?
CnH2n+1 COOH
Name the carboxyl group?
1- Mehtanoic 2- Ethanoic 3- Propanoic 4- Butanoic 5- Pentanoic 6- Hexanoic 7- Heptanoic 8- Octanoic
What are uses for alcohols?
Solvents and fuels
What are uses for Carboxylic acid?
Pickling, vinegar, soap and medicine
What are uses for esters?
Perfumes and flavourings
What does each symbol mean in:
E- Cm Delta T
What must you convert the “mass” into to work out answer?
E = energy C = Heat capacity of water (4.18) m= Mass in Kgs Delta = The difference between T= Temperature
Above what boiling temperature is a liquid? and below what boiling point temperature is a gas?
What is intermolecular bonding?
These are bonds created between molecules
Why does butane have a higher melting point than methane?
Because butane has a higher melting point as there are more intermolecular forces to break - so requires more energy.
What two properties increase, when the size of the molecule becomes smaller?
Boiling point and viscosity
What two properties decease, when the size of the molecule is larger?
Ease of evaporation and flammability
What does complete combustion of a hydrocarbon produce?
Complete combustion of a hydrocarbon provides carbon dioxide and water
What is needed for complete combustion to take place?
a good oxygen supply
What happens when there is not enough oxygen from the air and not all of the hydrocarbon are turned into carbon dioxide and water?
incomplete combustion happens when there is not enough oxygen in the air and not all the hydrocarbon will be turned into carbon dioxide and water
What is crude oil?
Crude oil is a mixture of chemical compounds which can be separated by a process called fractional distillation
Describe the term unsaturated?
Carbon to carbon bond
Describe the term saturated?
single bond
What happens when bromine is added to an unsaturated solution?
Bromine decolourises when added to an unsaturated solution
