Hereditary/innate factors
Nativist: maturation plays a role as some characteristics may only appear after a person has matured
Genetics
Family, twin & adoption studies

Evolutionary
Based on that a behaviour or characteristic that promotes survival & reproduction will be naturally selected
(Bowlby 1969)
Nurture
Behaviour coming from the environment/external factors
Nurturist: some sort of external stimulation to create behaviour
‘Tabula rasa’- ‘blank slate’ onto which experiences were drawn
Behaviourism
Behaviourists- assume that behaviour can be explained in terms of experience alone

The view that both nature and nurture work together to shape human behaviour
