most Boer farmers were skilled hunters & ‘trekkers’ = used to riding on horses & shooting

had some artillery gunners w some old field guns but also G & Fr artillery

used artillery singly, rather than in groups,

What were the Boers’ most effective fighting units?
mobile commandos

- commandos elected officers who knew the country
- friends on almost every farm = could live off the land
When were mobile commandos especially effective?
later stages of the war (1900-1901)
Who supported the Boers?
- Afrikaans speakers in Br-ruled Natal & Cape Colony sympathised
- foreign backers e.g. Germany + few hundred foreign volunteers joined

foreign countries reluctant to risk Britain’s enmity by giving overt support
