Nature of Science: Models and Patterns Flashcards
Define the word MODEL.
It is a representation of a particular phenomenon using something else to make it easier to understand and study.
What are the 4 types of models?
physical model, mathematical model, conceptual model, computer simulations
What is a physical model?
A physical model is a 3D model that you can see and touch and shows how parts relate to one another.
What is the limitation of a physical model?
The model might not reflect the physical behavior of the full-size object. For example, a roller coaster model will not accurately show how wind will affect the ride.
What is a mathematical model?
A mathematical model is a model that uses numerical data and equations to model an event or idea. It often inputs data constants and output data.
What is a limitation of a mathematical model?
You cannot use it to model how different parts are assembled.
What is a conceptual model?
It is a model that helps to illustrate or explain an idea and make comparisons with different things. An example is the energy pyramid because it describes how only 10% of energy is passed on from one animal to the next.
What are computer simulations?
It is a model that combines large amounts of data and mathematical models with computer graphic and animation programs. When roller coaster engineers change variables in the mathematical models, they use computer simulation to view the effects of the change.
Models can…
- Provide a quick glimpse of complex problems
- Connect the dots from one event to another
- Make predictions
Define the word PATTERN.
It is a consistent plan or model used as a guide for understanding and predicting things.
What are the three types of patterns?
- Physical Patterns
- Patterns in Graphs
- Cyclic Patterns
How do patterns help geologists?
Geologists are Earth scientists who measure the chemical composition, age and location of rocks. They look for patterns in these measurements because they are what allow them to propose what processes formed the rocks years ago. They also use the patterns to draw conclusions about how Earth has changed over time.
What is a physical pattern? Give an example.
It is a pattern that you observe using your eyes or other instruments is a physical pattern. An example is the patterns in exposed rock layers tell the order in which the rocks are formed.
Define Patterns in Graphs.
Plotted data on graphs are analyzed for patterns. Patterns on graphs can appear as straight lines, curved lines, or waves. They can be used to predict events in the future.
Define cyclic patterns.
An event that repeats many times in a predictable order, such as the phases of the Moon, has a cyclic pattern.
