Nature of Science Flashcards
A series of steps that guide scientists to investigate questions about the natural world
Scientific Method
Factual information
Evidence
Information collected by using one or more senses
Observations
Pieces of information gathered through observations; heir values may be quantitative or qualitative
Data
Information that can be counted or measured; represented numerically
Quantitative Data
Information that is observed with the 5 senses; represented by a description
Qualitative Data
An interpretation of data that is isological and based upon experience and/or prior knowledge
Inference
In science, a testable and possible idea about a set of observations and/or a natural phenomenon. Evidence supports or rejects hypotheses
Hypothesis
In science, a well-tested explanation for natural phenomena that unifies a broad range of observations
Theory
In science, this is a simple statement that describes some aspect of the universe; it is accepted at face value based upon repeated observances of some phenomenon.
Law
A method of testing a hypothesis that utilizes a control group and an experimental group with only one variable (difference) between the control group and experimental groups
Controlled Experiment
One factor in an experiment that is manipulated in the experimental group, described as the treatment applied to the experimental group
Independent Variable
The observable or measurable results in an experiment
Dependent Variable
Factors in a controlled experiment that are kept the same for both the experimental and control group
Controlled Variables/Constants
Part of a controlled experiment; is exposed to all the same conditions as the experimental group except for the independent variable, and serves as a comparison to the experimental group
Control Group
