Nature of Matter Flashcards
What does all matter have in common?
Matter consists of atoms.
What is an atom made up of?
Electrons
Protons
Neutrons
What are the particles of an atom’s charges?
Electron- negative
Proton- positive
Neutron- neutral
What is an element?
The simplest pure substance.
What determines the difference between atoms?
Primarily, the amount of protons.
What is a compound?
A chemically combined substance made of two or more elements. (Not a pure substance)
What bond shares electrons rather than disperses?
Covalent bonds.
What is a molecule?
A group of atoms held together by covalent bonds.
What determines how the atoms bond together?
The arrangement of the electrons.
What are polar molecules?
Molecules with an unequal distribution of electrical charge.
What kind of bond is the weakest?
Hydrogen bond.
What is an Ionic bond?
An atom or molecule that has gained or lost one or more electrons.
Why are ions negatively or positively charged?
They have an unequal amount of electrons to protons.
What are the charges for an atom that has lost/gained an electron?
Gained electron- negative
Lost electron- positive
