Q

What does the ancient greek philosopher Epicurus describe god as

A

Malevolent, meaning cruel, when explaining the contradictions between the nature of god and the presence of evil and suffering: “Is he able, but not wilkling? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then when cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him god?”

Q

Christians solutions to the problem of evil

A

God gave us free will. Therefore although he exists, he cannot interfere in any suffering humans experience as a result of their own choices.

Suffering is not God’s fault. Sin entered the perfect world God created when the first humans, adam and eve, used their free will to turn away from God. The story of their disobedience is told in genesis 3.

Experiencing bad things is all parts of God’s plan and humans should respond positively.

According to many Christians, balance is essential - humans need evil to appreciate good.

God is fair, so good people will be rewarded in Heaven, even if they suffer during their lives in earth.

First Job loses his livestock his servants and all his children. Although remains faithful and praises God. Then A horrible weeping sores all over him. Job’s wife tells him to reject God and to accept that he is dieing but Job refuses

Eventually God appears to Job. He asks impossible questions that show Job how little he can understand about God’s ultimate plan. Job is humbled by this encounter, and at last appreciates that Gods unlimited power cannot be fully understood by human beings.

Christans belive that after he rose from the dead, Jesus did not die a second time. Instead, 40 days after his resurrection, Jesus left the earth by being taken up body and soul to heaven to re-join God the father.

A

It shows that Jesus really had overcome death he wasn’t resurrected to die again, but to live forever.

For christans, that fact that Jesus’ followers witnessed him ascending into the clouds leaves no doubt that he is alive with the father in heaven, and is no longer limited to living on earth.

The ascension demonstrates God’s omnipotence.
