Nature of God Flashcards
Omniscient
God is all knowing
“Praise the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his”
Omnipotent
God is all powerful
God can do anything and has the power to perform miracles since he has the power to break the laws of nature because he created them.
Omnipresent
God is everywhere and in everything
Example: In the story of Jonah in the bible Jonah tries to flee from God however this is impossible because god is omnipresent, meaning he is everywhere.
Omnibenevolent
God is all loving
The belief that God can only do good and always does the most loving thing even if people do not understand it.
Eternal
God exists in the past, present and future and has no beginning and no end.
Creator
The christian belief that the world and everything in it was created by God.
Transcendent
God cares about his creation but does not take control and leaves it to others to know right from wrong
Some Christians reject this extreme view because they believe that this would make God pointless
Immanent
The belief that God is in the world and universe and is active.
Some Christians reject this because they argue that if he is active why does he not solve all problems in the world?
Impersonal
The belief that God is just an idea or force and is not present in the universe.
However, it is impossible to have a relationship with an idea or force
Personal
The belief that God is like a human being with human emotions.
However, if God is personal and like a human being then it is impossible for him to be omnipotent, omnipresent or omnibenevolant
Quote: God is transcendent, impersonal, immanent and personal
“The son is the image of the invisible God”
This means that although God is impersonal and transcendent he is also immanent personal in the form of jesus
Bible story: God is immanent and personal
God walks through the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve which means that he must have human qualities and features and that he exists on earth
