Nature Of God Flashcards
What is the Mool Mantra
Creed (A statement of beliefs that people live by) in Sikhism.
Fundamental Prayer in Sikhism. The Mool Mantra serves as a declaration of faith and a reminder of God’s nature.
Holy Book
Guru Granth Sahib Ji
What does Mool Mantra mean?
Main Chant/ Root Verse - this should repeated by all Sikhs on a daily basis (with most Sikhs reciting it early in the morning and meditating on the Mantar (scared Chant)). It should not only be learnt in Punjabi but in their native tongue so that they can truly understand God.
Where is the Mool Matra found?
First words in the Sikh Holy Book- Guru Granth Sahib
Ik Onkaar
One, Universal Creator, God
God is one, and has always existed.
Sikhs are monotheists believing that there is one God, and worshipping the image of God is forbidden.
God is the creator of all things- the creator who sustains the universe.
Satnam
Truth is his Name:
Word for truth is ‘sat’ and so God is sometimes referred to as ‘Satnam’. God is eternal Truth and can be reached by humans if they reflect on truth.
Karta Purakh
Creative Being Personified- God is the Creator:
God is present in the creation that he has made. He is present in the souls of human beings who can therefore understand what is right and what is wrong. Humans are born with a ‘Divine Spark’ which lives within us- shows how we can have a personal relationship with God (God is immanent).
Nirbhao/ Nirvair
He is fearless/ No hatred
Fear and hatred can only be caused if something causes it and is affected by it. God is one and there is nothing else so.
Akaal Moorat
Image of the Undying,
God is eternal beyond time and there has never been a time when God didn’t exist. He is changeless.
Ajooni
Beyond Birth
God isn’t born and therefore cannot die. God isn’t caused by anything that came before him, nor is her dependent on anything else.
Saibhang
Self-existent
Nothing brought God into being. God wasn’t caused by anything that came before. God isn’t dependent on anything else.
Gur Prasad
By Gurus Grace
God makes himself known through his word. If Sikhs try to understand Gods word through worship and prayer in the same way they live, they will receive God’s blessing
