Nature of Belief - Revelation: Revealed theology vs natural theology Flashcards
1
Q
Define revealed theology
A
- we learn about God through his divine closure as a passive recipient (either propositional vs non-propositional)
- God actively chooses to reveal it to us
2
Q
Define natural theology
A
- use your reason and observation in nature to go looking for God
- everyone has a reason and observation => can deduce facts about God themselves, it is open to everyone
3
Q
Aquinas’ view
A
- both forms of theology were complementary and could work together
- finding the same truths in two different ways, God has chosen to be known by people in two different ways
4
Q
Criticism of NT
A
- discounts fallibility of senses
- Descartes and perceptual variation/his scepticism
5
Q
Criticisms of RT
A
- how do we know its not an illusion
- Freud: RE is an illusion of wish fulfilment and promotes solipsism unlike NT, meaning it cannot be falsified
