nature/nurture Flashcards
nature
suggests that we are the product of our genetic inheritance, such that how we behave is due to the factors innate within us
nurture
we are the products of our upbringings such that how we behave is due to our personal encounters and experiences
strengths of the nature debate
- supported by evidence of behaviour appearing to be difficult to change
- could potentially be useful
- probably not bias 0 biological factors affect people the same way anywhere
weakness of nature debate
- may not be possible to change a person’s nature
- too reductionist - behaviour is too complicated to be attributed to single genes
strengths of nurture debate
supported by evidence of behaviour being open to change
- suggests ways to change behaviour by changing how a child is brought up
weaknesses of nurture debate
- could be socially sensitive, leading children to blame their parents for how they were brought up
monozygotic twins
identical - ovum splits and forms two separate embryos
dizigotic twins
fraternal - two ova are separately fertilised by two sperm and then develop in the same womb such twins are as genetically similar to each other as any brothers and sisters are
