Naturalistic Fallacy Flashcards
naturalistic fallacy =
difference between naturalism and non-naturalism
- attempting to define morality leads to a naturalistic fallacy
Moore - naturalistic fallacy
- whenever a philosopher attempts to prove an ethic by trying to use a definition of the term good
Moore was
an ethical non-naturalist
Moore believed
morality cannot be defined by natural properties
Nature is not moral but
amoral (without a sense of morality)
Moore thinks we cant define goodness by characteristics example
pleasure can be good but goodness is not defined by pleasure
Pleasure is a non-moral concept so nothing is intrinsically good about it except we
define it that way (define it as good)
therefore such definitions are open to
question
- not everyone agrees that some characteristics are good, not in every situation
