Q

What criticism is made by G.E. Moore?

A

The naturalistic fallacy, which argues defining goodness as a natural property causes problems as it raises open questions and it’s false to define moral terms by relating them to other states.
He argues just because something is natural and you desire it doesn’t mean it’s good and means the question ‘is it good is always asked’.
A second argument is that trying to define yellow as a natural property is impossible as yellow is yellow, therefore goodness is the same. Goodness is goodness.

Q

What is a second criticism?

A

The ‘is’ ‘ought’ problem put forward by David Hume. Naturalism makes a false link with the ‘is’ statements about the world and the ‘ought’ statements about morality. A moral imperative is a different type of statement to a descriptive one.
