Natural Selection vocab Flashcards
A molecule that is present in all living things and that contains the information that determines the traits that a living thing inherits and needs to live.
DNA
In a nucleic-acid chain a subunit that consists of a sugar, a prosphate, and a nitrogenous base.
Nucleotide
he embarked on a five-year survey voyage around the world on the HMS Beagle. His studies of specimens around the globe led him to formulate his theory of evolution and his views on the process of natural selection.
Charles Darwin
They figured out what DNA looked like.
Watson and Crick
She was able to make images of DNA molecules
Rosaland Frainklin
A change in the nucleotide base sequence as a gene or DNA molecule
Mutations
A characteristic that improves a individuals ability to survive and reproduce in a particular environment.
Adaptations
A group of organisms that are closely related and can mate to produce fertile offspring.
Species
The process in which inherited characteristics within a population change over generations such that new species sometimes arrive.
Evolution
The remains or physical evidence of an organism preserved by geological processes.
Fossils
A historical sequence of life indicated by fossils found in layers of the earths crust.
Fossil record
A genetically determined characteristic.
Trait
The human practice of breeding animals or plants that have certain desired characteristics.
Selective breeding
The process in which individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive and reproduce more successfully then less well adapted individuals do; a theory to explain the mechanism of evolution.
Natural Selection
The period between the birth of one generation and the birth of the next generation.
Generation time
