Natural selection theories Flashcards
Natural selection acts directly on phenotypes, but evolution consists of changes in allele frequencies
flypaper traps lost their carnivorous function. flies stoped producing sticky mucus, then pitfall traps evovled, which allowed the hair like structures to get trapped.
natural selection is not forward looking; it is a random process, selects among the variant traits already in the environment. the variant trait selected for is more likely to survive, only acts on variation that already exists. these come from mutation
the pitfall and snap traps from fly paper is an example of
secondary adaptation, they loss a function and then gained one
Exaptation
new function for an existing trait, like secretion on end of plants: existing trait
also caught insects: new function
Natural selection does not lead to prefection (T or F)

Natural selection is nonrandom, but not progressive (T or F)
